963 Hz: Meaning, Benefits & How to Listen

963 Hz is the highest of the solfeggio frequencies. Often called the “frequency of the gods”, it is traditionally linked to the crown chakra, spiritual connection and a sense of oneness. Here is what 963 Hz is, what it is traditionally associated with, what research does and doesn’t say, and how to listen.

What is 963 Hz?

A frequency of 963 hertz (Hz) is a sound wave that vibrates 963 times per second. On a piano it sits between A#5 (about 932 Hz) and B5 (about 988 Hz).

963 Hz is one of the nine solfeggio frequencies: 174, 285, 396, 417, 528, 639, 741, 852 and 963 Hz. The modern list became popular in the 1990s through the authors Joseph Puleo and Leonard Horowitz, who linked six of the tones to a medieval Latin hymn to St John the Baptist. The first syllables of that hymn (ut, re, mi, fa, sol, la) gave us the do-re-mi scale. 174, 285 and 963 Hz were added to the set later.

Why is 963 Hz linked to the crown chakra?

963 Hz was added to the solfeggio set after the original six tones. In the tradition it is associated with spiritual awakening, higher awareness and feeling connected to something larger than yourself. That is why it is most often connected with the crown chakra (Sahasrara), at the top of the head, though chakra mappings vary.

What does the research say?

You may see 963 Hz described as activating the pineal gland. That claim is not supported by reliable evidence.

There is no reliable scientific research on 963 Hz specifically. The meanings above come from spiritual and sound-healing traditions, not from clinical studies. What research on relaxing music in general does suggest is that calm, steady sound can help many people feel more relaxed and wind down. That is the honest way to think about 963 Hz: a pleasant tone that many people enjoy for meditation and rest.

What people use 963 Hz for

  • Spiritual meditation: a high, clear tone for long sits.

  • Crown chakra practice: as the last step of a chakra meditation sequence.

  • Prayer and reflection: a quiet, spacious background.

  • Yoga nidra and stillness: soft sound at low volume while lying down.

  • Ending a session: a few minutes of 963 Hz after lower tones.

How to listen to 963 Hz

  1. Choose a pure 963 Hz tone, or music layered with 963 Hz if you prefer something softer.

  2. Keep the volume low. It should sit in the background, not fill the room.

  3. Use speakers or headphones. Unlike binaural beats, a single tone does not need headphones.

  4. Start with 10 to 20 minutes. For sleep, play a longer track through the night.

  5. Sit tall, relax your shoulders and rest your attention at the top of your head.

963 Hz vs 852 Hz

963 Hz and 852 Hz are the two highest solfeggio tones. 852 Hz is linked to intuition and the third eye, while 963 Hz is linked to the crown chakra and a sense of oneness.

Frequently asked questions

963 Hz is most often linked to the crown chakra (Sahasrara), though chakra mappings vary between teachers.

There is no reliable evidence for that claim. Many people simply enjoy 963 Hz as a calm, spacious tone for meditation.

No. A single 963 Hz tone works the same through speakers or headphones. Headphones are only needed for binaural beats, which play a different frequency in each ear.

Start with 10 to 20 minutes during meditation or a break. For sleep, many people play a longer track at a low volume through the night.

For most people, listening to soft tones at a low volume is fine. Keep the volume low, and if you have tinnitus or another hearing concern, check with your doctor first.
