396 Hz: Meaning, Benefits & How to Listen

396 Hz is the first tone of the original solfeggio scale. It is traditionally linked to letting go of fear and guilt, and to the root chakra, which makes it popular for grounding meditations. Here is what 396 Hz is, what it is traditionally associated with, what research does and doesn’t say, and how to listen.

What is 396 Hz?

A frequency of 396 hertz (Hz) is a sound wave that vibrates 396 times per second. On a piano it sits just below G4, which is about 392 Hz.

396 Hz is one of the nine solfeggio frequencies: 174, 285, 396, 417, 528, 639, 741, 852 and 963 Hz. The modern list became popular in the 1990s through the authors Joseph Puleo and Leonard Horowitz, who linked six of the tones to a medieval Latin hymn to St John the Baptist. The first syllables of that hymn (ut, re, mi, fa, sol, la) gave us the do-re-mi scale. 174, 285 and 963 Hz were added to the set later.

Why is 396 Hz linked to the root chakra?

396 Hz is linked to the syllable “ut”, the first note of the hymn behind the solfeggio scale. In the tradition it is associated with releasing fear and guilt and feeling safe and stable. That is why it is most often connected with the root chakra (Muladhara), the chakra of grounding and security.

What does the research say?

There is no reliable scientific research on 396 Hz specifically. The meanings above come from spiritual and sound-healing traditions, not from clinical studies. What research on relaxing music in general does suggest is that calm, steady sound can help many people feel more relaxed and wind down. That is the honest way to think about 396 Hz: a pleasant tone that many people enjoy for meditation and rest.

What people use 396 Hz for

  • Root chakra meditation: a steady tone for grounding practice.

  • Letting go of the day: 10 to 20 minutes of quiet listening in the evening.

  • Falling asleep: a soft tone, or melodic 396 Hz music, at low volume.

  • Journaling: a calm background while you write things down and let them go.

  • Yoga: slow background sound for standing and seated poses.

How to listen to 396 Hz

  1. Choose a pure 396 Hz tone, or music layered with 396 Hz if you prefer something softer.

  2. Keep the volume low. It should sit in the background, not fill the room.

  3. Use speakers or headphones. Unlike binaural beats, a single tone does not need headphones.

  4. Start with 10 to 20 minutes. For sleep, play a longer track through the night.

  5. Sit with your feet flat on the floor and breathe slowly, noticing the contact with the ground.

396 Hz vs 417 Hz

396 Hz and 417 Hz are the first two tones of the original solfeggio scale. 396 Hz is linked to grounding and letting go of fear, while 417 Hz is linked to change and clearing out the old. Many people listen to them in that order.

Frequently asked questions

Many people find a soft 396 Hz tone calming, but there is no reliable evidence that it treats anxiety. If anxiety affects your daily life, please talk to a doctor or therapist.

396 Hz is most often linked to the root chakra (Muladhara), though chakra mappings vary between teachers.

No. A single 396 Hz tone works the same through speakers or headphones. Headphones are only needed for binaural beats, which play a different frequency in each ear.

Start with 10 to 20 minutes during meditation or a break. For sleep, many people play a longer track at a low volume through the night.

For most people, listening to soft tones at a low volume is fine. Keep the volume low, and if you have tinnitus or another hearing concern, check with your doctor first.
